Map catalog for offline maps

Since version v1.0.7 the app offers a map catalog to download offline vector maps from nearly all countries and states of the world.

How to start the map catalog

  • Open the Map page
  • From the left menu bar choose “Maps”
  • The page “Choose your map” contains a plus sign in the upper right corner, click on it
  • Choose the “Map Download” option of the Add Map popup menu and press OK
  • Choose your desired country for download

Download progress is shown as a grayed out name in the list of available maps. The dashboard also has a progress button and allows to cancel the download. When the final download is complete, you will receive a success message. You should keep the app on top while downloading.

You can select the map as usual after the final download.

Import offline vector maps – manually

The usage of vector offline maps is introduced with the Update v1.0.6 of the app.

Currently you can import OpenStreetMap vector offline maps in widely available format “Mapsforge” from several sources by external download and import into the App.

One of the next Updates will add a Download feature inside the App.

HowTo import a vector map

Download the .map file

Use this link as recommended source for offline maps.

Copy the file into the shared maaloo-Folder

After the download the map-file should be part of the Downloads folder. The system app “Files” can copy the file into the shared documents folder of the app “maaloo”.

Select “Copy” or “Move”
Select “maaloo” and “Copy”

Restart the App

The app searches only after start up for new files in the shared documents folder of the app. So the app needs to be canceled and restarted to detect the new map file.

Use the vector map

The Maps selector now should contain a new entry with the name of your imported file.

First Launch

Hooray! It’s done! After some moons of developing this app from scratch, it is time to put a glass of champagne out, and cheers on the first launch of the app.

A moment to take a short breath and see the many work as rewarded when you can admire the app in the App Store. As first version a smaller star in the sky, but one that wants to get brighter and brighter in the future. Even now the app will be able to give you a pleasant geocaching experience. Enjoy yourself and test it out.
